The season of the falling leaves has arrived and we are beginning to enjoy the coming harvest. It is time to slow down and get ready for the colder seasons. It is also a great time for a short cleanse to get the body ready for the heavier foods to come. Beet, carrot and ginger is one of my favorite juices and great for curbing sugar cravings. Celery, Kale, Apple and Dandelion is another of my favorites and great for toning the liver. It doesn't have to be a long cleanse, even just a few days of juicing can give the body a much needed rest and boost your immunity for the coming season.
Even if you are not feeling called to cleanse, making sure you get a good healthy dose of greens daily will make sure you get your vitamins and minerals and plenty of roughage for the digestive tract. If possible, look for organic veggies to avoid pesticides, fungicides and herbicides which affect leafy greens and high water content veggies more than some foods.
If possible try to find a local farmer's market. It's a great way to meet your community and to meet the farmer's that are growing your food. Some local farms also provide a weekly box delivery during the cooler months, filled with root vegetable and greens that can grow into the cooler weather.
With the cooler weather and with the kids going back to school, the flu season could start affecting some of us. There are times when getting a cold can be a good thing in terms of exercising the immune system but we should be able to jump back pretty fast. Here are three of my favorite natural immune boosters and natural antibiotics. They are best taken for 2-3 weeks at a time and then switched so as not to build up tolerance. From left to right we have ginger tea which is fine to take longer term and whenever you feel a tickle in your throat. In the center is echinacea tincture and on the right is oregano oil. They are both powerful natural antibacterial and antiviral tinctures that are great to use in combination.
Lactose intolerance is a hot topic these days and one that i think is worth mentioning in terms of the cold and flu season. Milk is quite mucous forming and can lead to a cozy place for bacteria to grow so lactose alternatives are always something to consider. One of my favorites is homemade almond milk. So easy and tasty. You can also use any seeds like pumpkin, sunflower or even hemp.
Instructions for making homemade almond milk
Soak the almonds overnight or up to 2 days. ...
Drain and rinse the almonds. ...
Combine the almonds and water in a blender. ...
Blend at the highest speed for 2 minutes. ...
Strain the almonds. ...
Press all the almond milk from the almond meal. ...
Sweeten to taste. ...
Refrigerate almond milk.

When you have the best drinking water at your disposible there are great ways to use it. Here is a Great Detox Water recipe which is a great and easy way to alkalize the body and do a mini detox. All you have to do is add it to your day in the morning before eating, in the afternoon in between meals and in the evening before bed. When you use ionized alkaline water it will allow the cucumber and mint to really absorb deeply.
